Upcoming October Programs

WILD THINGS
Is your little one Wild about Nature? Come to the Nature Center and help your child create their own Nature Crown. Then, we will go for a nature hike to find leaves, twigs and other small finds to decorate their crowns. When we return to the Nature Center, we will read Where The Wild Things Are and we might even have time for our own Wild Rumpus!

Come take a hike and gather some small sticks, twigs, acorns and pinecones. We will use these items to create our own little people. You will get to bring your nature pal home with you to remind you of your fun at the park!

ORGANIC HERBAL BODY CARE PRODUCTS ON A BUDGET
Organic herbal body care products can be pricey, but everyone deserves products that are safe and affordable? Learn how to make your own face scrub, shampoo and lip balm, while pampering ourselves at the same time. It’s easy, inexpensive and fun to make your own! Bring an empty shampoo bottle that has been rinsed out and a towel.

Under the glow of the moon, many creatures of the night will be out and about! We'll learn about the park's nocturnal residents, and play fun games; bring marshmallows if you would like to roast them. Children under 3 are free.

SMALL TRAPPING WORKSHOP
Come and find out how and why we trap small animals to study. You will learn how to properly handle small animals. The animals trapped will be released and the traps reset. You can return on Sunday to check the traps and see if any were recaptured.

These program are designed for little nature lovers!  Your child will learn about the natural world through stories, live animals, nature walks, hands on crafts, and games.   Dress appropriately for outdoor activities.

Fall Festival for Preschoolers
Come celebrate cooler days and leaves crunching beneath your feet!  Catoctin Creek Nature Center welcomes Fall with a fun Fall Festival.  Come play some games, sing some songs and learn about the Fall Season.  We will take a hike and make a craft using leaves we gathered on our hike.

APPLE PICKING TIME
With the fall weather comes the Apple harvest.  Learn about this wonderful fruit and how it develops through its life cycle.  Sing songs about apples and listen to a story about The Little House of Red.  See if you can figure out what this story is talking about.  We will end with an apple print painting project.

Survival Skills
Come and learn different animal survival techniques and how a predator is always on the lookout for its prey.  Then let your imagination turn you back into a person and see if you could survive a night in the woods of Catoctin Creek Park if you were lost.  Could you think like an animal and survive the night?  Then come to the nature center and find out.  Great fun!

Wildlife exploration walks
Discover what’s going on in the woods and fields around Catoctin Creek.  We’ll take a stroll along one of the park’s trails exploring and enjoying being outdoors!

Come and find out why succulents are important to Catoctin Creek Nature Center.  You will learn how easy it is to take care of this interesting plant and make a small succulent wreath to take home.

The art of camoflauge
Have you ever come upon an animal in the woods and wondered how it blends into its environment so well? Learn about why camouflage is so important to animals and the many ways a person can hide themselves. We will also have the opportunity to see how well we can camouflage ourselves too. Wear play clothes, and be prepared to have fun and get muddy!

WOW! Wonders of Water
Water does so much for you! Can you return the favor? On this Wonders of Water journey, you will love water, save water, and share water! That’s a really big WOW!   This Girl Scout program will guide second and third grade girls through a fun and educational leadership journey that invites girls to engage their minds as they explore the Wonders of Water.

Labor Day Weekend


The Nature Center will be closed
Sunday, September 4 and Monday, September 5.

Enjoy your Labor Day weekend at Catoctin Creek Park.  The park will be open from 8 am until 6 pm on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday as normal. 

Please be advised that the Nature Center will be closed on Sunday, September 4 and Monday, September 5 in Observance of Labor Day.

The Nature Center will be open on Saturday, September 3 from 10 am until 6 pm.

Please come and enjoy the paved trails as well as the wooded trails, search for wildlife at the creek, as well as the playground equipment.

There is also a local Eagle Scout Project being completed on Saturday, September 3 starting at 9 am, if you are available in the afternoon to help a scout earn his eagle scout feel free to stop by the Nature Center to find out where and how.

Take a Break at the Catoctin Creek Nature Center

Come visit Catoctin Creek Nature Center and take a break, even the Hummingbirds stop for a minute.  During your visit stop by and grab a trail map and set out to see what the creatures of the park are up to.  For those with preschool age children looking for a fun activity there are three fabulous programs coming up within the next week.

Creek Chubs Club: 2-3 yrs, 1 day, $12
These programs are designed for little nature lovers! Your child will learn about the natural world through stories, live animals, nature walks, hands-on crafts, and games. Dress appropriately for outdoor activities.
Thursday 9/8, Tuesday 9/20, Thursday 10/6, and Tuesday 10/18. Each program runs from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM

Nature Explore Club:  4-6, 6 weeks, $ 40
This program has been designed to help children develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world while strengthening key observation, science, and mathematics skills. A collaborative project of the Arbor Day Foundation and Dimensions Educational Research Foundation, this program will help encourage participant’s enthusiasm for going outdoors to explore. They will read or listen to one of our adventure nature stories, and experience an adventure activity from our trained naturalist. Each week a different activity and adventure awaits.

Teddy Bear Picnic 2-5 yrs/ 1 day/ $ 12If you come out to the park today, you're in for a big surprise!  Bring a picnic lunch and blanket.  Don't forget your teddy bear!  We will read teddy bear stories and learn more about the black bears that live in Maryland.  We will sing teddy bear songs and make a teddy bear craft.  Saturday 9/10 12:00-1:00 pm
