Box Turtle Workshop

Do you own box turtles, or just want to learn more about them? Have you ever found an injured or sick box turtle and don’t know how to provide emergency care? You’ll find answers to these and other questions at this workshop. Participants will receive a CD that includes: three Power Points (Eastern Box Turtles: Disappearing Gems of the Forest, Non-Marine Turtles of Maryland, and Handling and Transport of Turtles), and a variety of relevant literature and online resources. Guest Speaker: Sandy Barnett was an animal keeper for 28 years, the last 17 as a Senior Herpetologist at the National Aquarium in Baltimore. She is senior author of “Indoor Care of North American Box Turtles,” which was awarded top article of the year in the veterinary journal, Exotic DVM, in 2004.

Catoctin Creek Field Study

Where: Catoctin Creek Nature Center & Park in Middletown, MD

Ages: 8 y.o. and up

This Saturday we will be conducting a survey of macroinvertebrates, tiny freshwater insects found in Catoctin Creek. Volunteers are needed to help collect, sort, and identify macroinvertebrates. We will be entering the water approximately up to 1-2 feet deep. Please wear boots or old sneakers that can get wet and dress for the weather. If you are interested in helping with this project please call us and let us know how many people will be coming in your group. This is a rain or shine event.

Upcoming Nature Hike Programs

Fall Colors Hike

Come join us as we take a beautiful walk along Catoctin Creek. We will search for signs of wildlife and learn about the processes which cause the leaves to change color in the Fall. Parents with infants are strongly encouraged to carry their infants in a backpack or pouch.

Halloween Hike

Halloween is coming and who doesn't like to dress up for it? Wear a costume and come learn about some animals that seem pretty spooky at first…until you know more about them. Touch a toad, sing to a salamander and meet some of our other creepy critters. After we learn about some animals, we will take a hike along the paved paths so everyone can enjoy a parade!
