Catoctin Creek Nature Center Holiday Hours


Catoctin Creek Nature Center will be closed Christmas Eve & Christmas Day. The nature center will re-open from (12pm-5pm) on Thurs. Dec. 26th and Fri. Dec. 27th. The nature center will be closed over the weekend (Sat. Dec. 28th & Sun Dec. 29th) and remain closed until Thursday January 2nd at noon. The park grounds will be open daily during this time from 8am-5pm. Happy Holidays!

In March Catoctin Creek Nature Center will be hosting a 5 week after school nature series at the Middletown Recreation Center.

Program Description: Catoctin Creek Critters After School Program schools out and now it’s time to play! Kids will have the chance to meet live animals, create nature crafts, and enjoy hands on nature activities.

2014 Spring Break Camp



Do you have to work the week before Easter? Don't worry Catoctin Creek Nature Center will be offering a 5-day Hooked On Nature Camp for kids ages (5-12 years old).

Program Description:
Hooked on Nature Camp
Spring has sprung! Join us as we search for signs of spring here in the park. We will be searching for our resident blue birds, frog eggs, larval salamanders, spring wildflowers, and much more. Activities include hiking, searching for forest and creek critters, meeting and learning about our nature center animals, playing outdoor games, geocaching, and nature crafting.

Critter Care Day Program
Have fun taking care of and interacting with our Nature Center animals! Help check the health of our animals including health checks (weigh & measure the animals), add mulch to their terrariums, clean their tanks, feed them, refresh their water, and learn some neat animal facts. Wear old clothes.

We would like to thank the Greenwall Garden Club for their generous donation to our bird sanctuary garden. The Greenwall Garden Club donated 10 beautiful native shrubs from Stadler Nurseries. Our Master Naturalist Dawne Howard and Deb Keimig originally designed this garden as a project for their Master Naturalist Class. This garden now provides great cover and native food sources for our local wildlife. Thank you!

MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY

 Make a Difference Day
Saturday October 26th
10am-1pm

This Saturday the Middletown Lions Club will be mulching our Multi-Sensory Trail here at Catoctin Creek Nature Center. This trail will include a guide rope, which leads our visitors to 12 different touch boxes along the nature trail. Each touch box will contain a box with a hole for them to place their hand inside to feel or to smell an artifact inside the box. Garrett Johnson of troop # 476 constructed the touch boxes as his Eagle Scout Project. Troop #476 is sponsored by The Middletown Lions Club.

The Middletown Lions Club will be completing the mulching of this trail on the 26th as part of their Make a Difference Day Project here in the community. The Middletown Lions Club and the Frederick County Nature Council raised the funds necessary for purchasing the posts and hardware for the guide rope.

This Saturday & Sunday The Frederick County Nature Council & Middletown Lions Club will be holding a bake sale at Catoctin Creek Nature Center to benefit our New Multi Sensory Trail. This trail will include a guide rope to lead our vision impaired visitors to 12 different interpretive boxes along the nature trail. We hope to see you this weekend.

Crayfish Capers: Join us as we take a walk along the creek in search of crayfish and other aquatic critters. Use dip nets and stereoscopes to catch and study these creatures up close. Make a crayfish craft to take home. Be prepared to get wet in this tromp through the water. Wear closed-toed shoes and clothes that can get wet.

Fish Survey this Saturday


Saturday July 13th

This Saturday MD-DNR staff, nature center staff, and volunteers will be conducting fish electroshocking surveys of Catoctin Creek. We are interested in surveying the fish diversity within the creek. We will be looking for a small number of volunteers to help us sort and count fish.  If you are interested in assisting with this survey please call the nature center at: 301-600-2050.

Volunteers Needed


We are looking for volunteers to assist with an invasive plant pull tomorrow Saturday July 6th (9-10:30am) here at Catoctin Creek Park.  We will be removing non-native plants and planting some native paw-paw trees in the park. The paw-paw trees have been generously donated by John Smucker. Paw-paw trees are the host plant for the zebra swallowtail butterfly. If you are interested in assisting with this project please call the nature center at: 301-600-2051. Please remember to bring: gardening gloves, refillable water bottle, and dress for the weather.

Upcoming Programs


ECO-Adventure Summer Camp: Come and join us for a summer filled with outdoors adventures. Each week will include a different weekly focus as well as the following core activities: creek walks, nature hikes, team building games, and archery practice.

Ages: 8-13 years old

Week 2: Wildlife Wonders (July 1-5):
Explore the habitats and lives of the wild animals of Catoctin Creek. Meet live animals and explore the creek, woods, and meadows of the park searching for the wild critters that live here. Camp will be closed on Thurs. July 4th for the Fourth of July Holiday. Space is still available. Please call or go online to register for this camp.

Alien Invaders: Plant Patrol
The Alien Plant Patrol needs your help! Make a difference by removing non-native and invasive plants that threaten the park's ecology. Experienced staff will teach you how to recognize and properly remove different pest plants throughout the park. This program is FREE but you MUST PRE-REGISTER

Toad Abodes
If you love toads, this is the program for you! First we'll talk about these hopping amphibians and then make a toad home that you can decorate and take home!

I Can Camp CAMPING IN THE PARK
Give your child an introduction to camping in this Parent/Child program. Go on a flashlight night walk and enjoy campfire activities. Learn the “leave no trace” ethics that help the environment. Bring your own tent, sleeping bags, and evening snack. A continental breakfast will be provided. Registration is for parent/child pair-$10 charge for each additional family member.

Catoctin Creek Nature Center
Wayne Hildebrand, the North American Amphibian Monitoring Program Maryland Calling Amphibian Coordinator and Maryland Amphibian and Reptile Atlas Frederick County Coordinator will be leading this walk. Please wear old cloths and be prepared to get a little muddy. This program was made possible by our Frederick County Nature Council. The Frederick County Nature Council is a non-profit group of volunteers providing support and advocacy for Fountain Rock Park and Catoctin Creek Nature Center by offering nature oriented programs and activities for all citizens of Frederick County, MD.

Week 7: Winged Wonders (Aug 5-9):
Have you ever wished you could fly? We will spend a week studying the master of flight: birds, insects, and flying squirrels. Activities for the week will include: insect safari, bird walks, dip netting, and stream searches, designing bird feeders, and nature crafts.

Week 8: Nature Rocks (Aug 12-16):
Join us as we uncover a world from long ago by studying the local history and geology of Catoctin Creek Park. Campers during the week will be collecting rocks, exploring the creek bed, searching for hidden treasures, and geocaching.

Nature Camps: Features lively outdoor adventures, interactions with our Nature Center animals, hands-on activities, games, nature walks, storytelling and crafts. Every week will include new adventures as well as weekly favorites such as catching critters and exploring the tributaries, meadows, and forests of Catoctin Creek Park! Please note that all activities are subject to change due to heat advisories or unsafe weather conditions.
