Frederick County Nature Council is a non-profit group of volunteers providing support and advocacy for Fountain Rock Park and Catoctin Creek Nature Center by offering nature oriented programs and activities for all citizens of Frederick County, MD.

Have you ever found an injured or orphaned animal and wondered what to do with it? Will a mother bird really abandon her baby bird if a human touches it? Come to Fountain Rock Nature Center and visit Dr. Barbara Stastny, DVM of Opossum Pike Veterinary Clinic to answer all your wildlife emergency questions!

Schools Out Winter Nature Detectives Series                                              December 27th

Inquiring minds want to know . . . all about nature's chilly secrets! In each program of this series, we'll explore, investigate, craft, and hike our way to understanding one of nature's wonders. Topics will include: Session 1: winter weather detectives, Session 2: winter tree identification, arboreal creatures (animals that live in trees) and animal adaptations. Did you know that you can make a useful and beautiful bowl out of a dried gourd? Our ancestors did. They used what was available to them for storage and created vessels that were works of art. Trail Installation for the Butterfly Meadow

We would like to thank the many dedicated volunteers who helped install the trails for our Butterfly Meadow Project.

In two days we moved over 94 cubic square yards of mulch and planted 13 lbs of wildflower seeds. If you were unable to join us this weekend check back with us this coming spring. We will be looking for volunteers to help plant several species of wildflowers.

Butterfly Meadow Planting

Saturday 19th (10-2pm) & Sunday 20th (10-2pm)

This coming Saturday & Sunday local volunteers will help install the trails and plant the wildflower seeds for the butterfly meadow. The funding of this project was made possible by the generous donation of the Billotti Woods Family.

Billotti Woods Family have dedicated this project in memory of their daughter Francie Billotti Woods and her children Chandler Wood, 5, Gavin Wood, 4, and Fiona Wood, 2. Francie grew up in the Middletown Valley and graduated from Middletown High School. Francie, 33, worked in fund development for nonprofit organizations and served on the board of Volunteer Frederick. She also taught Sunday School at Holy Family Catholic Community.

If you are interested in volunteering with us this weekend please remember to:

THANKSGIVING CRAFT

CORN HUSK DOLLS

Come learn to make a classic Native American toy that can be used as a Thanksgiving decoration. Learn to make a corn husk doll. While we wait for the husks to soften, we will learn about the corn snake that lives at the nature center.

Why is it called a corn snake? Does it eat corn? After a brief animal program, children will learn how to make corn husk dolls. Who knew you could recycle your corn husks and turn them into a cute toy?

Naturalist Corner: Eastern Box Turtles

Box Turtles have unique markings and pigmentations on the bottoms of their shells.

Have you seen me?

We are interested in collecting information regarding our resident box turtle here at the park. If you encounter a box turtle while walking the trails please bring it back to the nature center. *Please make sure you keep track of where you found the turtle. Nature Center Staff will take a photograph of the turtles shell and make notes regarding the individual turtles physical characteristics i.e.: eye color, the color of their head & front legs, the markings on the underside of their shell, and then return the turtle to where they were found. We are also able to estimate the age of the turtle by counting the growth rings on the top of their shell.

Naturalist Corner: Fall Colors

Why do leaves change color in the fall?
- Leaves are “food factories” where the plants energy is produced. Plants take in sunlight and produce their own energy through the process of photosynthesis where they take in carbon dioxide and produce oxygen and glucose. As the days get shorter in the Fall and Winter there is in turn less sunlight available to fuel this process. As the Trees begin to prepare for the winter they stop producing chlorophyll (a green pigment involved in photosynthesis). In turn the underlying pigments shades of yellow and orange colors begin to appear.

What conditions produce the brightest fall leaf colors?
- A mild wet spring, average rainfall in the summer, warm sunny fall days with cool nights normally produce the most vivid autumn colors.

As the summer draws to a close, trees begin shedding their leaves, children go back to school, and things start to calm down and cool off. Even though we've wrapped up Eco-Adventure Camp and Nature Camp for the year, Catoctin Creek Nature Center still has plenty of opportunities to explore the natural world! See below for some of our upcoming programs, all of which will be held at Catoctin Creek Nature Center. Even if you don't want to sign up for a program, everyday visitors are always welcome!

The nature center is open Noon to 6 PM Tuesday through Friday, as well as Sunday. Saturday the nature center opens at 10 AM and closes at 6 PM. The nature center is closed on Mondays.

Weekend Special: Paracord Bracelet Instructions!

One of our most popular projects has been the fashioning of Paracord bracelets, under the tutelage of one of our knowledgeable counselors. Due to the wild success of this originally minor craft, we have decided to provide instructions for all to use to fashion their own super-strong bracelet. Simply follow the instructions and photos provided below! Paracord and buckles in various colors can be purchased at Bucklerunner.com, Supplycaptain.com, or any other website which provides similar military-grade materials.

1. Supplies

-2 lengths of paracord, each approx. 5 feet long

-1 3/8” contoured plastic buckles

- lighter (butane is recommended due to its precise flame and quicker melt)

- scissors

-The internal cordage of the paracord can be removed

if you would like a thinner bracelet.

Once you choose the color you would like as the border color, insert it
through the top of one side of the clip and pull it through about 6 inches.

Insert the second color (this one will be the center color

of the bracelet) through the bottom of the clip and pull through

the top about 6 inches.

Long strands should be on the outside, shorter strands will become the inside of the bracelet.

Take the long border strand color (yellow) and thread it under both the short middle strands, leaving a figure 4 loop. Place the strand over the long strand on the opposite side (blue).

Take the center color long strand (blue) and drape it across the middle stands,

with the border strand inside its loop, then place it through the figure 4 loop

of the border color (yellow).

This is what the first tightened knot

should look like.

Second knot: notice the colors are on opposite sides. This is important –

you always want to start with the border color (yellow in picture) regardless of its position.

Wrap the long center color strand around the long border strand

and over the middle short strands, then place it through the loop

of the long border color strand.

Bracelet with the first 2 knots – continue the knots until the bracelet is

1 inch from fitting around your wrist.

Put the middle strands through the top of the other

half of the plastic clip.

12.

Fold the strands toward the bottom of the bracelet

until they reach the knots.

13.

Secure the strands with the next knot.

Cut the long strands.

Burn the outside ends. CAUTION – VERY HOT! (The bracelet material turns to

Adventures at Catoctin Creek: Nature Camp Week 6!

From tubing to crab soccer, swimming to activism projects, our campers have been busy at Catoctin Creek! Here are some highlights from the week.

One of our camp's unintended main attractions has been the crafting of Paracord bracelets, under the instruction of one of our wonderful counselors. While many campers have already had the opportunity to create a bracelet, we will shortly be creating a separate section on the blog with detailed instructions and photos to make your own Paracord bracelet!

Weekend special: History of Catoctin Creek Park!

After another long week of camps, we decided to make a bit of a different blog post this week. One of our interns has been working on deciphering the history of the park's land, and here's what we've learned so far.

The land on which Catoctin Creek Park and Nature Center sits was originally the home of John and Sarah Ann Sanner, who established a farmstead on the land in the mid-19th century. In 1866, the property was purchased by Oliver and Hanson Boyer, and the land remained in the Boyer family until 1913. After the Boyers sold the property, the land changed hands many times until being purchased by the Frederick County Board of Commissioners in 1974.

The ruins found on the lands of Catoctin Creek Park are federally protected as part of Historic Site 18FR994, "The Spring Secured".

While our intern is still busy trying to find the land records of the park in the State archives, we were also able to get in contact with a relative of a family who lived there. She provided us with some wonderful historical photos, as shown below.

Nature Camp Week 2, and important holiday information!

Our second week of Nature camps is underway, and both campers and staff are having a blast! From roach races to archery to crafts, our campers are making the most out of their time here at Catoctin Creek!

While we love having visitors, the Nature Center will be closed on Sunday, July 3rd, and Monday, July 4th, in observation of Independence Day. Nature camp for next week will begin on Tuesday, July 5th. Have a safe, happy and environmentally-friendly 4th of July!

Spring is officially here at Catoctin Creek Park and the new summer hours have begun, the park is open from 8 am until 6 pm. As a reminder the Nature Center is also open an hour longer with hours from 12 pm until 6 pm Tue-Fri and Sunday and 10 am until 6 pm on Saturday. Come out and enjoy the beautiful weather at the park for a walk in the woods, a family picnic at one of the pavillions, and explore the discovery playground. This program allows for the birthday party family to have a 2 hour activitiy time in one of our amazing program rooms. We wanted to give a special thank you to all the volunteers who helped make Catoctin Creek Nature Center's first Project Clean Stream a success. We collected 1.8 tons of trash along the northwest stream bank that parallels Sumantown Road. Further work will be completed this Saturday, April 9, 2011 during Nature Fest where volunteers will be removing invasive vines and conducting a large tree and shrub planting south of the Nature Center. To all who are interested in the plantings or the removal of invasive plant species call 301-600-2050 and find out how you can help.

Project Clean Stream a Success!

Today, in spite of the weather Project Clean Stream had over 30 volunteers. Through everyones effort over 30 tires and over 60 bags of trash were removed from the stream banks along Sumantown Road. Thanks again to all of the local neighbors, park volunteers, and local girl scout troups 81375 and 81214 and 81055 who helped with the clean up.

Snow at Catoctin Creek!

April Fools! No snow but we do have rain. Volunteers are still needed for Project Clean Stream on Saturday, April 2, 2011 from 9 am until 12 pm to help clean up the north stream in the park. Project Clean Stream will be a rain or shine event and for all volunteers please be prepared to get muddy and for the rain. Help clean the stream for our wildlife.

We have been creating woodland trails around the park and have made some interesting discoveries. We were creating the northwestern spring trail and when we moved a downed tree limb coiled under it was an eastern garter snake, very sluggish, but moving. Elsewhere in the park, we were taking pictures of the spring fed cistern and found an eastern milk snake lying in the bottom. We are unsure how it got in there but we were able to successfully get it out. This is just a sample of what you may find hiking on our trails around the park.

Volunteers needed for Project Stream

On April 2, 2011 from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm Catoctin Creek Park and Nature Center will be a host site for Project Clean Stream. Project Clean Stream is an annual stream and shoreline cleanup coordinated by the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and partnering watershed organizations which engages volunteers throughout the Chesapeake Bay area. By cleaning local area waterways it will help lower the pollution that reaches the bay. Volunteers are needed at Catoctin Creek Park and Nature Center and for those interested Call Park Naturalist Brian Campbell at 301-600-2050. Please dress as you would for a hike with a chance to become wet or muddy. Please bring gloves and drinking water. Trash bags will be provided.

Spring and Snow!

It's hard to imagine that last week visitors were enjoying the warm spring-like weather by wearing shorts; then, instantly overnight the landscape changed with another blanket of snow.

Catoctin Creek Nature Center looks great during any season and offers recreational opportunities for all. Take advantage of the latest snowfall and try cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or go for a nature hike and look for animal tracks. Don't fret, the warm weather will be with us again.

Catoctin Creek Park is open daily at 8am and closes at 5pm. The nature center is opened Tuesdays through Fridays 12pm-5pm, Saturdays 10am-5pm and on Sundays from 12pm-5pm. Anytime is a great time to take advantage of the great outdoors!

The Catoctin Creek Ribbon Cutting was held yesterday and these are some photos from the day's festivities. There was so much excitement in the air as visitors of all ages enjoyed the great weather, the programs, and the facilities. If you missed the event you can still enjoy the nature center since it is now officially open Tuesday Thru Sunday each week. Whistle Pig Wake-up!

Groundhog day arrived at Catoctin Creek and unfortunately for some winter is still not over. But for others this time of year is a great chance to explore the outdoors even with a snow cover blanketing the hillside. Through puppets and craft activities everyone was able to learn all about this magnificent mammal! Fortunately the groundhog did see it's shadow and winter will still be with us for a little while longer...

Homeschoolers in Action!

The first Home Schooled Junior Naturalists program was a huge success. The program and project focussed on plants in winter. Homeschoolers braved the weather for a brisk walk around Catoctin Creek Park and then assisted the Park Naturalist with decorating the center with some indoor plants that make it feel more natural indoors!

The date is official, February 17th at 1 pm the newest Nature Center in Frederick County will have its "Ribbon Cutting" ceremony. Here are some updated photos of just a portion of the playground area. Additional play structures will include bouldering rocks and rope bridge connecting. Children of all ages will have the opportunity to explore this fantastic play setting!

After leaving the playground and pavilion area journey onto the trail leading towards the nature center. Inside the carpet is being placed inside the Discovery Room where the children's area will house discovery boxes full of interactive nature activities.

Two paths, One Trail

Stone Rocks were placed this weekend at specific corners and turns along the new nature trail. The trails completion is moving along nicely, with seeding and fill top soil placement expected to finish after Thanksgiving.

Here are some new photos of the ongoing construction of inside the nature center.

The Discovery Room is southwardly facing thus allowing the sunlight to be utilized to lighten the space.

The nature center is designed with many earth tones to accentuate the buildings architecture. The stone around the doorway was specifically selected to match the rocks discovered during excavation and they also match the foundation stonework amongst the historical structures that remain in the park.

The Frederick Board of County Commissioners proclaimed October 2010 to be Energy Awareness Month in Frederick County and the Office of Environmental Sustainability (OES) has planned a number of initiatives and events for county employees and the community. Energy Awareness Month is an opportunity to highlight the County's progress and achievements in meeting its goal to reduce consumption of non-renewable energy by 50% in fifteen years and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25% by 2025.
